The owner wanted a blend of modern convenience and Victorian styling. Light was quite limited in the flat and the entrance hall was small with no outside light at all. The doors were wood effect slab fronted firedoors throughout and felt heavy and dominating in the space. The kitchen and bathroom were functional but lacked character.

The client had a number of pieces of furniture he wanted incorporated into the design including a globe drinks cabinet, a Victorian desk and a gateleg small dining table. From there I suggested paneling the doors and lower half of the walls as well as repainting all in a single crisp mint colour to provide a neutral but traditionally detailed backdrop. A range of bespoke lampshades, a whole new bathroom, new flooring throughout and a kitchen respray with antique brass handles, sink, under unit lighting and a light marbled worktop gave a light modern finish to what had been a slightly tired looking space. Roman blinds throughout set above the windows helped increase the natural light whilst an uplit cornice was installed in the hallway to create an entrance that felt light and welcoming rather than dark and cramped as it had before. Leather chesterfields and jute rugs helped zone the rooms and give a softer, comfortable feel to the space.
